An Evening of Culture

Joe planned an entire Saturday for us, which we decided to call Cultural Day.

Cultural Event 1: College Football.  Off to a local bar & grill to watch the Mizzou game -- nice big W for MU and good lunch.  Ok, Joe -- so far, so good.

Cultural Event 2: To the Maui Raceway Park for the final event of the 2010 racing season.  Who would imagine Maui would have the biggest dump of a drag strip I've ever been to?

These guys (and many gals) will race anything -- jacked up trucks, VW bugs, souped-up and street legal cars, crazy-fast motorcycles, but one of the most interesting races were the junior dragsters, 1/8 mile races driven by kids.

about a 12-14 year-old girl

It was a big event -- lots of tailgating, grilling and partying.  After each race, the cars drive (or are towed) on a lane close to the crowd and everyone whoops and hollers and the drivers wave at everyone.  The whole thing was pretty hilarious but we had to leave around 10 pm for the next Cultural event.

Cultural Event 3:  While I was in Kansas City, Joe found out our maintenance man here at the condo complex plays bass in a local band.  So we headed to a local joint called the Kiwi Roadhouse (roadhouse being the key word here -- bathrooms in the back alley) to hear his band, Black Powder.  Surprisingly, they were pretty good and we were considered "friends of the band" -- woohoo free drinks! -- and had a great time.

And that's what I get for leaving Joe alone while I was in KC -- he had time to plan all kinds of things for us to do this weekend... actually ended up being a really fun day :)
