Whale Watching

Exciting news -- whales have moved into our bay (Maalaea Bay right in front of our condo)!  Even better, Carol and I had made arrangements for all of us to go out on the Pacific Whale Foundation catamaran this morning for a whale watch.

It was an absolutely beautiful morning, sunny and calm winds (which was amazing since Maalaea Bay is known for it's windy conditions).

The water was so smooth it was like glass

Right away, we started sighting whale spouts in the distance.  We raced back and forth across the bay to get closer to the whales and saw about a dozen.  They dropped a hydrophone (underwater microphone) and we could hear the whales "singing".  The male whales make this sound to attract the females to mate, so Joe calls it "begging" -- haha.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any great pictures today but here are a couple.

These humpback whales are huge.
Adults are about 52' long and weigh 30-50 tons

Whale Tail
One time we saw two whales come up and flip their tails in unison.
We decided that was a whale and his wingman :)

Had a great time -- it was good to get to see whales this time of year and I'm hoping we'll be able to see many more right from our lanai before the end of our trip.
