Rolling Rock Beach

We went to one of my favorite places in Maui, a place we call Rolling Rock beach (I think the "official" name is Huakini Bay but there are no signs).  Joe and I visited this area in October but wanted to go back with Carol and Richard before we left Maui.

So we headed up the back side of Haleakala volcano and Carol took these panoramic pictures.  Double click on these two pictures to get the full effect of what we saw along the way.

To get down to this beach, you just pull off the road near Mile Marker 29, park up near the road and hike about 1/4 mile down a very steep lava-encrusted hill.

Definitely worth the hike down

There are thousands of round rocks that constantly roll with the ebb and flow of the water.  If you listen closely to this video, the clacking noise is so loud you can hear it above the crashing waves.

Joe and Richard had a great time hiking all over the cliffs, but it made me very nervous.  Fortunately, there were no sprained ankles or falls off the cliffs.

I'm King of the World!

Joe mentioned as we were leaving that a perfect ending to our day would be if we saw a whale spout or two ... and boy, did he get his wish!

As he walked down another cliff and got near the ocean, a huge whale breached and slammed down in the water making the loudest crash right in front of him -- I'm not sure of the last time I saw Joe so excited!  :)

Good times...
